wow has a lot happened since we last wrote. most significantly LB's goal has been changed by the court from reunification to termination of parental rights. that means little bear's parents' rights would be legally terminated and he would be eligible for adoption. there are lots of steps in the process, but changing the goal was a big one and had to be the first thing to happen.
forward.
the next thing that has to happen, if a foster family is interested in adopting the child they've had in their home, is ensure they have a foster contract with the state. who knew that it also meant taking another round of classes and having an addendum to the original home study among other fun things. we lucked out when talking to our licensing worker and found a class that was just about to start. three short weeks later we were done with classes and ready for the addendum to be written. our worker will be here friday to do her adoption addendum visit and then we can cross that off the list.
forward.
after a goal is changed from reunification to TPR/adopt, a staffing must be held to determine who is available to be the adoption resource (more commonly referenced as the "forever family"). from that list of folks, the team involved with the case decide which resource would be best for the child(ren) in care. this an important second step that must be done before a child can be moved on in the process. we talked to our worker modnay night and were informed we were indeed selected as the adoption resource for LB.
forward.
once you're chosen as the adoption resource it's time to start getting serious. our worker will get us connected to our subsidy worker soon so we can iron that part out. since LB has elevated needs in several areas there will be much to discuss. the other thing that happens is you start talking to your lawyer. we've made contact with our lawyer and have that ball rolling as much as we can for the time being. and now comes the harder part.
pause.
the system, as we've learned, is a constant push and pull. things either get done so rapidly you can't process them or so slowly you swear they'll never happen. this, my friends, is where we wait. it's helpful to be proactive and available, and we try to be both, but no matter how much you will the process to move faster it just doesn't work that way. the division is a large, clunky machine that lurches and lumbers forward but at an unpredictable and unsteady pace. in the meantime, we'll keep working on safe hands, sight words, and how to eat neatly. there's really nothing else to do.
