[run, baby, run]

[kell and i have gone through a lifestyle transformation this summer. it started with our desire to identify factors that influence our life and take steps to ensure we were maximizing our potential. while there are lots of things we can't control, there is a great deal we can control. neither of us were looking for perfection, just an uptick in personal responsibility; a desire to ensure we're doing all we can to establish a quality existence. we wanted to make the best choices. as immanuel kant would say, we were seeking a "universal maxim" in all we do.

we looked at everything: our faith in the church, the possessions we hold, how we treat our rubbish, the relationships we keep, the trajectory of our careers, the food we put in our body, and the priorities we set with our money. we studied every compartment of ourselves as individuals and as a husband and wife--including taking stock of our exercise habits (or lack thereof).

kell is fortunate to have a body that stays naturally balanced most of the time. she's rarely sick, has always maintained a healthy (and oft envied) body weight, and enjoys the general benefits of being all around fit. i, on the other hand, had veered considerably from what anyone would deem as "all around fit." poor diet, constant stress, and lack of exercise had caused a steady progression of weigh gain from middle school through college, while my overall health suffered considerably. a multitude of what plagues me can be blamed on heritage but i was no longer interested in making that an acceptable excuse. personal responsibility, remember. the first step was to join 24 hour fitness, a space well-equipped to start our new personal initiatives. the second step was to find the right accountability.

enter nike+.

training with nike+ has been an integral part of my pathway to better physical health. i'm a data person. i love pouring over charts, graphs, numbers, and tables. i'm also a person who needs high motivation and accountability (thus my bad habit of starting time-sensitive tasks as last a possible). nike+ delivers all the goods i need to be a successful runner. to get started, you need a pair of nike+ compatible running shoes (i just got a new pair of free run 3+ and have about 60 miles on them), and ipod or iphone, and the nike+ sensor. the sensor goes in your shoe and is about 80% accurate out-of-the-box. you can calibrate it to make it a little better (around 90+%) if you want. not only do you get data updates during your run (time, distance, pace), but you get a wealth of data when you sync a run back home.

the charts are slick and the graphic interface is attractive and user-friendly. nike+ accounts are free and it costs nothing extra to use the site to sync your runs and track your progress. you can issue challenges to your running friends and set goals for yourself. it will automatically track your PR for 1 mile, 1k, 5k, and more. it provides you with mile splits on each run and gives you a place to record notes about your run.
a product like nike+ plus keeps me on track and accountable. it makes goal setting a snap. for instance, i know i ran 54 miles in the month of june. i spent close to 10 hours running and my average pace was 11'01"/mile. this is invaluable data as i set goals for the next month.

if you, like me, want to be active, but need a tool to keep you motivated i highly recommend you look into nike+. it may cost a little to get started, but once you become mesmerized by the loads of data and the fun of tracking your progress, it will be an investment you'll be glad you made.

trust me.]
